Cane To Sugar
Pakistan ranks among the top five countries in the world in terms of sugarcane cultivation area. Sugarcane is the primary raw material for sugar production and plays a vital role in the country’s agro-based economy. Since 1947, the area under sugarcane cultivation has expanded more rapidly than any other major crops, surpassing one million hectares in recent years.
Pakistan’s sugar industry remained one of the country’s largest agricultural sectors, with Punjab and Sindh accounting for around 93% of total sugarcane production. Sugarcane farming and sugar manufacturing contribute significantly to the national exchequer. Sugarcane by-products contribute significantly to foreign exchange earnings. Despite a planned increase in sugarcane area, actual sugar yield fell short of expectations due to slower sucrose recovery and inconsistent crushing performance throughout the season. Total sugar output for the 2024-25 season is expected at 5.7 MT.
